A consultative meeting was held at Kiang Nangbah Government College Auditorium, Jowai where the State Education Commissioner, Government of Meghalaya chaired by  Prof. SM Sungoh along with Prof. David Ried Syiemlieh, Tony T C Marak the advisers, members of the State Education Commission met with college principals, principals of Higher secondary Schools, Headmaster and Headmistress from various schools to discuss about the various issues and challenges faced by the educational institutions in both East and West Jaiñtia Hills District.  

During the meeting the Chairperson Prof. SM Sungoh stated that the purpose of the visit was to assess the current educational scenario in the district and to gather information that would help the commission make recommendations to the Government. The discussion focused on issues in implementing new programs including those related to NEP 2020 and emphasised the need for collaboration to find solutions. 

The Chairperson stressed the importance of holistic student development, which encompasses academic, physical and mental growth. The Chairperson emphasised collective responsibilities of educators in shaping students and preparing them for self-sufficiency.

During the discussion, the educator presented a range of problems and challenges they encountered including inadequate toilet facilities, infrastructure, and issues related to both trained and untrained teachers and staffing shortages. They highlighted the urgent need for better teacher training and professional development to enhance the quality of education. The Educators also raised concerns about coaching for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), requesting the establishment of coaching classes to guide and support students in their preparation. They emphasised that many students, particularly those from rural or less privileged backgrounds lack access to quality coaching and are often unaware of such opportunities putting them at a disadvantage.

Adviser Prof. David R Syiemlieh emphasised the need to address the stark difference between schools and colleges in the state capital, the main educational hubs and those in rural areas. He advocated for stronger recommendations to improve rural education through updated syllabi, enhanced infrastructure and sufficient teaching staff in rural educational institutions. Prof. Syiemlieh said these issues will be taken up by the State Education Commissions and the overlook concerns of drug abuse, smoking and sexual harassment in schools and colleges should be and would be prioritised in future discussion to developed effective strategies and to ensure the wellbeing and safety of students across the district and state as well.

Adviser Tony T C Marak in his concluding remark informed that the State Education Commission will compile the issues and suggestions raised during the meeting and submit them to the government for necessary action. Meanwhile, he urged educators to envision the future of schools and colleges over the next five to ten years and to seek out opportunities despite existing constraints. He emphasised the importance of striving to their best.

Tony Marak acknowledged the various issues raised, including inadequate infrastructure, lack of resources, and challenges faced by the school management and students. He encouraged the educator to focus on the positive action that can build not just individuals but significantly benefit both their students and society as a whole.

Smt. B.Blah, Additional Deputy Commissioner, WJHs, Smt. JU Kharpuri, Additional Deputy Commissioner, EJHs who were present  at the meeting also shared their perspective.
