As part of the state-wide initiative under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) – Watershed Development Component (WDC) 2.0,  the Soil and Water Conservation Office, Jowai  Territorial  successfully conducted Watershed Yatra at Mukhap Village, Laskein C&RD Block, West Jaintia Hills on 1st April 2025. The event  was flagged off by Shri. L.Pohktai DS&WCO, Jowai Plantation Crop and Shri. T.War DS&WCO, Jowai Territorial.  

The yatra aimed to promote sustainable water management, soil conservation, and community involvement in watershed development, aligning with the PMKSY-WDC 2.0’s objectives. 

The event was grace by Shri. Nujorki Sungoh, MLA Mookaiaw Constituency, Shri C. Lyngdoh,Doloi of  Elaka Raliang, Shri W. Passah, Sr. AS&WCO and office officials from Soil and Water Conservation Office, Jowai. 

Village Headman, Watershed Committee Members, Self Help Groups and Students were also present.

Speaking as Chief Guest, Shri. Nujorki Sungoh, hilighted and mentioned about Meghalaya’s immense blessings encompass  its natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and its biodiversity. He emphasised on  the importance of conservation and preservation to ensure long term sustainability of ecosystem.

Shri. T.War, spoke about the method and importance of harvesting rain water and ground water recharge and the importance of community participation in order to achieve water security.

As part of the Watershed Yatra, the office conducted a series of activities, a short Video Clip on Watershed Yatra was screened to raise awareness. An experience sharing followed, during which awards were presented to the watershed warriors in recognition of thier contribution to the watershed development. 

A Short Skit on Protection of  Land and Water Resources was performef to educate the public.

The event also featured a cultural dance by the SHGs. Additionally, an Open Quiz Competition conducted for the Students and latter prize were distributed for School Participants. 

Later, attendees actively participated in the Shramdhan (Cleaning  Drive) and the event was concluded with a Musical Performance by Shangpung Traditional and Lantern Lighting. 

The yatra included Prabhat Pheri  (Community Morning Walk for Awareness), Plantation Ceremony by the dignitaries,  Lokarpan  (Inauguration with a ceremonial candle lighting), A Shapath- Pledge Taking ceremony was taken to reinforce commitment to conservation, followed by Bhoomi Poojan (a Traditional Ritual performed by the Doloi of Elaka Raliang).
