The Committee on Environment of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly today observed World Environment Day by undertaking a tree plantation drive at the Assembly premises in Khyndailad, Shillong, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
The programme was led by the Chairman of the Committee on Environment, Shri Rakkam A. Sangma, and attended by Committee members Shri Ollan Singh Suin (MLA, Mawsynram), Shri Arbinstone B. Marak (MLA, Selsella), and Shri Nujorki Sungoh (MLA, Mowkaiaw), along with officers of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretariat and officials from the Social Forestry Department.
The event commenced with a welcome address by Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretary Shri Malthus S. Sangma, followed by the plantation of around 30 tree saplings within the Assembly campus, underscoring the legislature’s commitment to promoting a greener and more sustainable environment.
Speaking to the media after the programme, Chairman of the Committee on Environment, Shri Rakkam A. Sangma, emphasized the collective responsibility of citizens towards environmental protection. He urged people to actively participate in tree plantation and conservation efforts to ensure a secure and sustainable future for coming generations.
Shri Sangma noted that climate change is increasingly affecting Meghalaya, with rising temperatures, changing rainfall patterns, water scarcity, and reduced rainfall becoming growing concerns. He stressed the need to create greater awareness among citizens and motivate communities to take proactive steps towards environmental conservation.
He further stated that the Committee on Environment continues to take up issues of public concern relating to environmental protection and sustainable development and will continue to perform its responsibilities in the interest of the people. He also acknowledged the efforts of the State Government in undertaking various initiatives aimed at conserving and protecting the environment.
Speaking after the programme, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Secretary Shri Malthus S. Sangma said that the observance of World Environment Day should go beyond symbolic plantation activities. He said the Assembly’s commitment is not only to plant saplings but also to nurture and protect them until they mature and contribute meaningfully to the environment.
“We will not only plant trees but also ensure that the saplings are nurtured and cared for so that they grow and contribute to the greenery and environmental well-being of our State. Planting a tree is only the beginning; our responsibility is to ensure that it survives and flourishes,” he said.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Andrew Simons, Adviser (Legislation) to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
