[By Mr. W Passah, Ex HOD Electronics St Edmunds college Shillong]
It all started when James Watt in the 19th Century Invented The Steam Engine and it ran on Coal.
Rat Hole Miners the identical drama of today was the method to mine coal.
James Watt Engine gave rise To The Industrial Revolution with all traditional works replaced by machines and never controlled made The Madrid Agreement Alarmed at the Climate Change and Global Warming to pledge to CLAMP THE MERCURY RISE BY 1.5 degree Celsius by 2030.
COP 20 Glasgow 2020 Putin no 1 to be determine to bore the Artic!! To cause Justin Rowlatt the Green Activist of the BBC then, and who surveys the Artic to appear on TV Show to warn of Glacier melting and cited Bangladesh to be 6feet under water.
Scary indeed as our state Meghalaya of India has 323 km border with Bangladesh and 1971 reminded us of India trying to liberate the Hindus and the Shias from the clutches of Yahya Khan, India had to use its Military Power led by Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw the WW2 Veteran of Burma Campaign and the Jap emptied his bren upon Sam Manekshaw’s stomach but survived.
323 km of border and the International Humanitarian Aids was in full swing.
Sad to say majority of rice, oil, dal and blankets reached local markets.
Coming to Climate Change and Global Warming Meghalaya turns victim of coal fired Plants be it at Narpuh where around 14 Cement Plants are mudhrioming around village Lumshnong 145 km from capital of Meghalaya Shillong on way to Silchar.
And the saddest of all is that the 2003 Indian Electricity Act that forbids the use of Power Grids but it enacted 2003 Law that Coal fired plant to install at far place from the human dwellings.
So successful was it in its maiden appearance that IEA did not require license to supply and to transmit up to 10 km. And on tariff, for Agri and Domestic the tariff should be as low as possible and for Industries and Commercial tariff will be as high as practicable.
And besides IEA 2003, the Chimneys need to have what are called The Electro Static Precipitators ESPs
Main purpose is to not let the gases like Carbon Dioxide, Sulphur Dioxide, Nitrous oxide to escape unto humans.
The piece meal walls of chimney to be charged say Positive and the gases to climb up the chimney through thin wires charged Negative to be attracted by the walls of the chimney. Periodically the walls vibrated and gas molecules to be buried deep under earth.
As far as Meghalaya is concerned not only IEA never enacted but the Chimneys are not having the ESPs.
And 2025 March, Byrnihat got the certificate of being the most polluted area in India and no doubt in Asia and in the whole world
Coming to Narpuh Cement Plants, Retd Tech friends asked of ESPs to find they had never had heard of it and most devastating is they added there was no Environment Officer either.
Narpuh health wise is in the severe critical condition as reported.
The river Lukha overlooked by the mighty Khadoom Range that wedges North Cachar of Assam and East Jaintia of Meghalaya, and the range has Narpuh Wild Life Sanctuary that sinks to the Surmah Plain unto the Bay of Bengal, has fishes climbing from Bangladesh unto the river Lukha, to float dead with the DC in the 2020s warning the villagers not to consume the fishes.
YOY YOY YOY did we fight for Hillstate and to be told in 1972 by The Geological Survey of India that coal and Limestone to last till Eternity.
Rightly so but what about Forest Dwellers of Narpuh.
Byrnihat Gone. And Narpuh Next.
