To mark World Environment Day 2025, the Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), Shillong, under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, organised a special awareness programme at St. Francis D’Assisi Hr School, Umbir, Ri Bhoi today. The event focused on promoting environmental sustainability, nutrition awareness, and student engagement through interactive sessions and creative competitions.
The day began with a plantation drive, where students, NCC cadets, teachers, and invited guests planted fruit-bearing trees within the school campus. This activity symbolised a commitment to environmental care, reinforcing national campaigns like Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and Swachhata Hi Seva.
Shri Heipormi Papang, District Agriculture Officer, Umsning Block, spoke about this year’s World Environment Day theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution.” He outlined the harmful effects of plastic waste, from polluting water bodies and degrading soil to endangering wildlife and entering the human food chain through microplastics. Shri Papang urged students to adopt small but consistent habits that reduce plastic use and to champion sustainable alternatives. He also encouraged planting trees in the name of their mothers under the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign, blending environmental action with emotional tribute.
Nutritionist Smt Dari Shylla detailed the goals of Poshan Abhiyan, India’s flagship nutrition scheme targeting children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. She linked malnutrition with environmental degradation, noting how unhealthy diets, plastic packaging, and loss of traditional foods contribute to both health and pollution challenges. She encouraged embracing local, seasonal foods, kitchen gardens, and sustainable practices to help achieve a “Suposhit Bharat” — a well-nourished India.
Brother Biju Jose, Principal of St. Francis D’Assisi Hr School, welcomed CBC Shillong’s collaboration and highlighted the importance of such programmes in nurturing responsible and environmentally aware students. He encouraged them to reaffirm their commitment to protecting the planet by conserving resources and promoting sustainable behaviour — not just at school, but in every aspect of their daily lives.
A quiz, art, and ‘Waste to Art’ competition inspired creativity on plastic pollution, sustainability, and nutrition themes. Students impressed judges by transforming waste into meaningful eco-friendly artworks. Winners were honoured with certificates and prizes.
Shri Gopajit Das, Assistant Director, CBC & PIB Shillong, emphasised plastic pollution’s impact on daily life and called on students to actively reject single-use plastics and adopt greener habits. He appreciated the school’s efforts and the students’ enthusiastic participation.
Students, educators, and officials came together in a united pledge — reaffirming their commitment to build a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future.
