The College of Teacher Education (PGT), Shillong held a formal programme on 17th October
2025 to inaugurate a newly constructed additional classroom funded under the Members of
Parliament Local Area Development (MPLAD) Scheme 2024–2025. The project, sanctioned
through the initiative of Dr. W.R. Kharlukhi, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, marks
a significant infrastructural addition aimed at enhancing the learning environment for future
educators and sustaining the institution’s academic growth.
The inaugural ceremony was graced by Dr. W.R. Kharlukhi as the Chief Guest, who unveiled the
commemorative plaque and formally inaugurated the new classroom building in the presence
of Shri W.L. Lyngdoh, President of the Governing Body, Dr. Bahunlang Tron, Principal of the
College, Members of the Governing Body, faculty members, student-teachers, and guests. The
event began with a welcome address from Dr. B. Tron, Principal, who expressed heartfelt
gratitude to Dr. Kharlukhi for his instrumental role in sanctioning the fund that enabled the
addition of the new facility through the MPLAD Scheme.
In his address, Dr. Kharlukhi commended the College for its continued dedication to teacher
education and its contribution to society through quality teacher preparation. He reminded the
gathering that any assistance rendered through the MPLAD Scheme should not be taken as an
act of generosity but as a responsibility and duty of a public representative towards the
educational advancement of the constituency. Emphasizing the importance of institutional
expansion, the Chief Guest also urged the College authorities to approach the Hon’ble Chief
Minister for further support to strengthen infrastructure and programs in line with emerging
academic needs.
Dr. Bahunlang Tron, in her address, expressed her sincere appreciation to Dr. Kharlukhi and
reiterated the vision of the College to evolve as a multidisciplinary institution equipped to
implement the provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 effectively. She
highlighted the challenges faced in transitioning to new academic structures and sought
continued cooperation from Government and other stakeholders to help realize this
transformation.
Shri W.L. Lyngdoh, President of the Governing Body, echoed similar sentiments and emphasized
that in the present educational landscape, teacher education institutions must embrace the
multidisciplinary approach envisioned by NEP 2020. He noted that such collaborative support
between public representatives and academic institutions could serve as a model for
sustainable educational advancement in the state.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by a faculty representative, acknowledging the
contributions of all dignitaries, the construction committee, and the students who made the
day memorable. The inauguration symbolized a reaffirmation of the College’s mission to
provide quality teacher education while aligning its future direction with the national vision for
a transformative educational framework under NEP 2020.
