
A financial literacy awareness programme for college students of the district was organised by the office of the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills today at the District Library Auditorium, Mynthong, Jowai.
The District and Sessions Judge Shri. N.A. Khan, was the Chief Guest, and Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa, IPS, as the Guest of Honor.
Deputy Commissioner Shri. Abhinav Kumar Singh, IAS, Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) of Amlarem Civil Sub-Division, Smt. V. Kezo, IAS, and Divisional Forest Officer (Territorial Division) Shri. M. Sagar, IFS, Assistant Commissioner Smt. LBR Marak, MCS were also present.
Shri. Abhinav Kumar Singh in his welcome address said that in today’s rapidly changing world, financial literacy has become an essential skill. He emphasised the importance of managing money responsibly, saving wisely, avoiding financial fraud and making informed financial decisions.
He stated that the programme was emphasised with an objective to promote responsible financial habits.
He also thanked ICFAI University and Canara Bank for their support.
In his address, Shri.N A Khan highlighted the importance of financial education and noted that a bill introduced in 2022 proposed making financial education compulsory in schools. He said financial education will equips students with the knowledge and skill to acquire, manage and make informed financial decision in today’s digital world.
Superintendent of Police Jagpal Singh Dhanoa spoke about the importance of the banking system and inflation. He explained that banks help protect the value of money by providing interest on savings. He also advised that people should avoid keeping money as cash because its value gradually decrease due to inflation.
In her remark Smt. V. Kezo said that this programme and initiative was conceptualised in reponse to the growing need of financial awareness. She mentioned that not only students but also state government employees often faced challenges in financial management.
The initiative mainly focused on students who are about to start their career after Class XII or graduation.It aims to help students understand how to manage personal finances, investing, budgeting and accessing government schemes, loans and other financial services.
Technical session was also conducted for the students by experts in the field, they shared valuable insights on financial literacy.
