Tura continues to navigate a complex balance between its rich natural heritage and emerging urban challenges in 2026. Environmentally, the town remains a lush cultural hub near the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve, though it faces localized issues such as erratic rainfall patterns and “Poor” to “Unhealthy” air quality, with PM2.5 levels occasionally exceeding WHO guidelines. Public health in the region is defined by a push toward modernization, highlighted by the near-completion of Tura Medical College, which aims to address historical shortages of specialized medical staff. While the “Tura Model” has successfully reduced malaria mortality over recent years, the community still faces risks from climate-sensitive diseases like typhoid and acute diarrhoeal illness, exacerbated by rising temperatures and humidity. To mitigate these pressures, ongoing initiatives like the Jal Jeevan Mission and landscape restoration projects focus on securing clean water and protecting the surrounding forests from the impacts of shifting cultivation and unregulated mining.
