The District Social Welfare Officer in collaboration with District Sankalp Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), West Jaintia Hills District, Jowai celebrated International Women’s Day under the Theme. “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, Empowerment.” today at District Library Auditorium, Mynthong, Jowai. The event also marked the 10 years of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) initiative highlighting a decade of efforts to uplift and empower girls through education and gender equality.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Smt. D V Lyngdoh, MCS, Additional Superintendent of Police Ishaan Gupta, IPS, Resource person Smt. I Warjri, Assistant Director, Good Governance Cell, Meghalaya Administrative Training Institute, Shillong, Meghalaya, Smt. Y. Najiar, District Social Welfare Officer cum District Nodal Officer DHEW, Jowai were present.

Speaking on the occasion Smt. Smt. D V Lyngdoh emphasized that education is the key to empowering women, it equips them to protect themselves from discrimination and in justice, However, she pointed out that true education is not just about earning degrees but also involves building strong moral values, respect and character.

She also urged parents to ensure that their children complete their education, as dropping out could negatively impact their future. Emphasizing that education is essential for overcoming challenges, improving livelihoods and fostering dignity and respect in the society.

Additional Superintendent of Police Ishaan Gupta stated that he was born in a state where governance is different from that of Meghalaya. He praised the strength and determination of the women here, acknowledging their contribution in various fields, whether in government office or politics. He also praised the active participation of local communities in social development, highlighting that such unity is rarely seen elsewhere.

Furthermore, he encourages the people to support one another in difficult times and to step forward whenever challenges arise.

During the event resource Person Smt. I Warjri shed light on key issues related to women safety, legal protection and government welfare schemes. She emphasized on the importance of One Stop Centre (OSC) which serves as immediate support hubs for women facing violence. The OSC provides essential services including medical aid, legal assistance, psychological counselling and temporary shelter. She discussed the legal protections available under laws like the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, urging women to seek justice and support without fear.  

Smt. Warjri also provided insights into various government scheme both Central and state schemes, that aimed at empowering women socially, economically and legally. 

As part of the celebration, a signature campaign was conducted where participants including Additional Superintendent of Police Ishaan Gupta, IPS, Additional Deputy Commissioner Smt. D V Lyngdoh, MCS, government officials, students, officials and staff of District Social Welfare Office signed their names as a commitment to supporting women’s empowerment and equal opportunities.

Additionally, a pledge vowing to actively campaign for women’s rights was also taken by the attendees, led by Smt. L Ksoo, Center Manager cum Protection Officer One stop Centre.
