A Legal Awareness Programme on the Prevention of Child Marriage was conducted today at Amlarem Market Area as part of the 100 Days District-Wise Action Plan for Prevention of Child Marriage in Meghalaya. The initiative was organized under the NALSA (ASHA – Awareness, Support, Help and Action) Standard Operating Procedure and the nationwide Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat Campaign.
The programme was attended by the Officer-in-Charge of Amlarem Police Station, the Assistant Commissioner, representatives from the District Bar Office (DBO), members of various Cluster Level Federations (CLFs) under the Amlarem Civil Sub-Division, Self Help Group (SHG) members, traditional heads, and representatives from the District Hub for Empowerment of Women.
During the awareness session, detailed information was provided on the provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006 and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012. The legal age of marriage — 18 years for females and 21 years for males — was reiterated, and the penalties for violating the law were clearly explained. It was emphasized that any person who conducts, facilitates, or promotes child marriage is liable for punishment, including imprisonment and monetary fines.
Speakers highlighted that child marriage not only violates the law but also has serious social and health consequences, including school dropout, early pregnancy, maternal health risks, economic vulnerability, and increased exposure to exploitation and abuse. The importance of community vigilance, parental responsibility, and collective action to safeguard children’s rights was strongly underscored.
A short street play was presented by the NSS Unit of Kiang Nangbah Government College, creatively depicting the harmful effects of child marriage and reinforcing the message that prevention requires active community participation.
In addition, awareness was created about the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY). The District Hub for Empowerment of Women, with support from the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), encouraged eligible beneficiaries to enroll and explained the financial assistance provided under the scheme. It was also clarified that involvement in child marriage may lead to disqualification from certain government welfare benefits, as the Government does not support unlawful practices.
The programme concluded with active interaction and participation from the public, reflecting a strong collective commitment toward making the district free from child marriage.
