In a major move to bring transparency, accountability, and efficiency to its emerging real estate sector, the Government of Meghalaya has officially notified the formation of the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA) under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016.

The notification, issued on February 18, 2020, marks a crucial milestone in ensuring consumer protection and orderly development within the state’s real estate industry.

RERA Meghalaya will serve as an independent statutory body, comprising a full-time Chairman and two Members. The Authority has been entrusted with several key responsibilities, such as overseeing the registration of real estate projects, promoters, and agents, ensuring compliance with the provisions of the Act and the rules framed under it, and providing a built-in adjudication mechanism for the swift resolution of disputes. Additionally, the Authority plays a crucial role in safeguarding the interests of homebuyers through continuous and rigorous regulatory oversight.

The RERA Office is located at the Urban Affairs Complex, Kharmalki (Behind Shillong Law College), Dhanketi, Shillong – 793001.

This initiative underscores the Meghalaya Government’s commitment to responsible urban growth, promoting consumer confidence and regulatory integrity as the state’s property sector expands.

RERA Meghalaya has urged all promoters, developers, and real estate agents operating in the state to register their projects and themselves as mandated under the law.

“This is not only a legal requirement but a vital step in building credibility and trust in the real estate ecosystem,” the Authority stated in its official communication.

The Authority has also warned that noncompliance may lead to penalties and regulatory actions as prescribed under the Act.
