A press conference was held today at the Shillong Press Club to brief the media about the objectives, programme flow, and significance of the National Voters’ Day Padyatra.

The programme will be organised by MY Bharat, Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, in collaboration with the Chief Election Officer, Government of Meghalaya, Sports Authority of India (SAI), Shillong, and the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Meghalaya.

The programme will be flagged off by Shri. B. D. R. Tiwari, Chief Election Officer, Government of Meghalaya and led by constitutional authorities, senior government officials, youth leaders, and MY Bharat volunteers.

The programme will also include a voter awareness padyatra, felicitation of first-time voters, and a pledge-taking ceremony reaffirming commitment to ethical voting and democratic participation.

National Voters’ Day, observed annually on 25 January, commemorates the foundation day of the Election Commission of India and aims to encourage informed, ethical, and participative electoral engagement, particularly among youth.

The padyatra aims to create awareness on the importance of voting, encourage voter registration and correction of electoral details, and mobilise MY Bharat volunteers as grassroots ambassadors of voter awareness.
