
The Craft Bazaar, organized by NIFT Shillong, came to a close yesterday (26/03/25), leaving behind a trail of vibrant colours, rich textures, and unforgettable experiences. The valedictory was graced by Shri. Sanjay Goyal, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary to the Govt. of Meghalaya.
At the closing ceremony, Shri. Shankar Kumar Jha, Director of NIFT Shillong, expressed his gratitude to the artisans, Faculty, Staff, Students and visitors who made the event a success. “Today, as we bring down the curtains on this year’s Craft Bazaar, I am filled with a sense of pride and accomplishment. We have not only showcased the rich cultural heritage of North East India but also provided a platform for students, artisans to connect with consumers” he said.
During his address at the Craft Bazaar, Shri. Sanjay Goyal, IAS, emphasized the importance of preserving traditional craftsmanship and promoting sustainable livelihoods. Goyal applauded the showcase of creativity by using traditional art in fashion. “Events such as these work as a good catalyst to support new initiatives” He highlighted on the importance of raising the standards through partnerships with local artisans and trainins, good packaging and standaized methods of marketing. Open network of market links for artisans to have direct connect with their consumers. He spoke about the Vishwakarma scheme, designed to support artisans, which has received an overwhelming 11,000 applications. The scheme aims to provide short-term training, upgrade skills, and link artisans to markets. Shri. Goyal encouraged artisans to become entrepreneurs, hiring at least 10 employees under them. He emphasized the importance of training the future generation to carry the trade forward, ensuring the preservation of traditional craftsmanship for years to come.
His inspiring words resonated with the audience, emphasizing the need to support and promote the rich cultural heritage of North East India’s artisans.
The Craft Bazaar featured an impressive array of craftwork, including textiles, pottery, musical instruments and jewellery showcasing the diverse talents of artisans from across North East India. The event also included a heritage walk, which provided visitors with a unique opportunity to explore the rich cultural heritage of the region.
