The observation of Road Safety Week, 2025 under the theme “Sadak Suraksha, Jeevan Raksha,” which began on November 4, 2025successfully concluded today the 6th November, 2025 in East Jaintia Hills District at a programme held at the premises of the office of the District Transport Officer (DTO), East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat.

Organized by the office of the District Transport Officer (DTO), East Jaintia Hills District, in collaboration with the District Administration, Police Department, Public Works Department (PWD) Roads and the Health Department, the programme was attended by District Transport Officer (DTO), East Jaintia Hills District, Shri V. R. Ryngkhlem in the presence of Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI), Shri. H. Suchiang, Enforcement Inspector, Shri K. Tyngsong, Sub- Inspector (SI) of Police, Khliehriat, Traffic Branch, Shri S. Shadap, Medical Officer, Urban Health & Wellness Centre (UHWC), Khliehriat, Dr Priyanka Shylla, President of Iatyllilang Drivers Association, Shri H. Rymbai, drivers, students and others.

In his address, District Transport Officer (DTO), Shri. V.R. Ryngkhlem, East Jaintia Hills District emphasised the important role of drivers in society, highlighting that they exemplify discipline, respect and responsibility in their profession. He stated that the Road Safety Week is organised annually to raise awareness and educate drivers and members of the public on the importance of safe driving practice in order to reduce the incidence of road accidents. While mentioning that 26,770 people lost their lives in road accidents inIndia in the year 2025, he urged drivers to avoid speeding, overtaking in blind zones and to always exercise patience and caution while driving on the road.

Shri Ryngkhlem further emphasized on the importance of wearing seat belts while driving and urged both drivers and pedestrians to remain vigilant on the road even as he reminded pedestrian to always check both sides before crossing the road stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility among all road users.

Furthermore, he stated that the theme of Road Safety Week 2025, “Sadak Suraksha, Jeevan Raksha” (Road Safety, Life Safety) underscores the importance of protecting lives through responsible driving.

In his address, Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI), Shri. H. Suchiang, East Jaintia Hills District urged all vehicle owners and drivers to strictly follow the rules and regulations laid down by the government. He pointed out that with the rapid increase in the number of vehicles, issues such as traffic congestion and accidents have become major concerns that require collective effort and responsibility from drivers, enforcement agencies and the public alike. He stressed that most accidents occur due to negligence and impatience and reminded drivers to be disciplined, patient and mindful.

He further highlighted the importance of proper vehicle registration and valid driving licenses, even as she cautioned students below 18 years of age not to engage in driving, stating that juvenile driving is punishable by law. He also informed the gathering on the government’s hit-and-run compensation scheme which provides ₹50,000 for serious injuries and ₹2 lakh for fatalities andalso reminded citizens on the provision of the Good Samaritan Law and encouraged participants to assist accident victims without fear.

Sub- Inspector (SI) of Police, Khliehriat, Traffic Branch, Shri S. Shadap in his speech during the programme reiterated on the importance of obeying traffic signals and warned about the dangers of drinking and driving stating that even a single mistake on the road can lead to fatal consequences even as he further urged drivers to always give way to emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire brigades to ensure timely assistance during emergency.

Medical Officer, Urban Health & Wellness Centre (UHWC), Khliehriat, Dr Priyanka Shylla emphasized to the gathering the importance of keeping First Aid Kits in vehicles for immediate medical response during accidents and also explained on basic first aid procedures, including bleeding control, fracture support and correct way to carry injured persons even as she trained participants on performing Cardiopulmonary Resusciation (CPR) through live demonstration.    

During the programme all attendees and dignitaries led by District Transport Officer (DTO), East Jaintia Hills District took a Pledge for Road Safety, to follow all traffic rules, drive responsibly, remain alert on the roads, avoid using mobile phones while driving and refrain from consuming intoxicants when behind the wheel.             Others who spoke during the programme include Enforcement Inspector, Shri K. Tyngsong and President of Iatyllilang Drivers Association, Shri H. Rymbai.
