As part of the 10 days special campaign on the international day of the Girl Child, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, the Office of the District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), WJH, under the Office of the District Social Welfare Officer, WJH organised a programme at St. Dominic Higher Secondary School, Mookyndeng, West Jaintia Hills District, creating awareness about Nutrition, Legal Rights, and Medical Care need of Girl Child.

Smt.Y.Kyndait,Gender Specialist, DHEW, in her introductory speech emphasised the various schemes and services under Mission Shakti which are facilitated by District Hub for Empowerment of Women (DHEW), WJH. She highlighted programmes such as One Stop Centre, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP), Women Helpline (181), Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) and the Palna National Creche Scheme.

Smt. Kyndait highlighted the importance of the International Day of the Girl Child Day which is celebrated under the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP)flagship program, which is part of the ongoing10 Days campaign. This year’s theme, “Girls Vision for future” emphasises the essential role of support for girl child in Education, Health, Sports, Safety and Security and Politics and enhancing their overall development.

Smt .M.Niang, Lady Supervisor, ICDS Laskein Block encouraged the students to eat healthy food and avoid junk food to maintain good health. She also emphasised the importance of the food item provided through ICDS to Anganwadi Centre, which are rich in nutrients and vitamins, urging the students to include this in their diet. She pointed out many adolescents are now experiencing premature greying of hair, which is because of lack vitamins. She advised the students to ensure they have a balanced diet that includes vitamin rich foods to prevent such issues and maintain good health.

Smt S. Lakiang, the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Ambassador, DHEW WJH, shared her inspiring journey experience in sports. She spoke about her success at the WFF India 2023 Mr & Ms East India 2023 Zonal Body Building & fitness Champion held at Ranchi Jharkhand and her achievement at Mr and Mrs India 11th National Body Building & Fitness Champion 2023 held at R.B.Dangayach Auditorium, Jaipur Rajasthan. Encouraging the students, Smt. Lakiang highlighted the significance of sports and that being involved in sports not only improves physical fitness but also strengthens emotional resilience and overall being. She emphasised the value of time management and hardwork, advising the students that dedication to both is a key to achieving success in sport and life.


Smt.M.Nongtdu addressed important issues affecting children within the District, focusing on the challenges they face.  She discussed the POCSO Act and its connection to teenage pregnancy. She also spoke on the Juvenile Justice Act, emphasising its role in safeguarding the rights of children in conflict with the law. She also highlighted the importance of educating children about ‘Good Touch and Dad Touch’ She informed the students about the service provided by the Child Helpline 1098 which offers support for the wellbeing and welfare of the Children. She encouraged the students to take their studies seriously and plan their career accordingly.

Smt.E.Niang Health Educator from Laskein C.H.C discussed the three health aspects  that adolescents should monitor , their Blood Pressure, Anaemia and Cholesterol. She explained the potential impact of deficiencies or imbalance, highlighting how high blood pressure, anaemia and high cholesterol can affect overall health during adolescence and lead to long term health complications. She also spoke about various services provided under RKSK through the Adolescence Friendly Clinic at Laskein C.H.C specifically for Adolescence.

The office also conducted an open Quiz Competition, Prizes were also distributed to the winners. 

The program was chaired by Smt. S. Meliora Lamare, Gender Specialist, DHEW and the welcome address was offered by Sr. M. Nongseij from St. Dominic Higher Secondary School, Mookyndeng.
