Winning a total number of 25 medals including 9 Gold, 7 Silver and 9 Bronze medals, Wapung Higher Secondary School emerged as the Overall Champion Team in the East Jaintia Hills District LevelInter School Athletics Meet 2025 which came to a close today at Teilang Playground, Dkhiah West, East Jaintia Hills District.

            The ClosingCeremony of this year’s meet was attended by Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri Shivansh Awasthi as Chief Guest in the presence of Superintendent of Police of the District, Shri Giri Prasad, District Sports Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Smti. Stephanie M Rapsang,other officials, sports association members, teachers and students.

Speaking during the Closing Ceremony, Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri Shivansh Awasthi congratulated all the athletes who have participated in the three -day event including those who have won medals and also those who could not win this time even as he called upon those who failed to win medals to not be disheartened but to come back stronger next year in order to emerge victorious.

Shri Awasthi also dwelt at length on the different interventions aimed at promoting the sports ecosystem in East Jaintia Hills in particular and Meghalaya in general which includes creation of sports infrastructures through the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) Fund, promotion of sports activities through the District Sports Promotion Society (DSPS) and schemes such as the Chief Minister’s Youth Development Scheme (CMYDS) through which financial assistance is extended to registered groups, associations, societies, etc.

Speaking on the National Games scheduled to be held in Meghalaya in the year 2027, Shri Awasthi said that the games provide a perfect opportunity to athletes of the district to showcase their sporting calibre and appealed to all stakeholders including coaches, sports associations, etc to extend all possible support to the athletes in their endeavour to excel in their respective disciplines.

Shri Awasthi also took the occasion to appeal to students to not just think of sports as an extracurricular activity but to also aim for a career in sports in the form of coaching jobs and others.

The closing function featured prize distribution to group wise champion teams with Sham Sham Secondary School and SenraijBranch Upper Primary School, Mukhaialong emerging as Champions of the Under-14 Boys and Under-14 Girls categories respectively. Wapung Higher Secondary School and Sham Sham Secondary School were adjudged Champions of the Under-16 Boys and Under-16 Girls categories respectively while in the Under-18 Category, Seinjait Tuber Higher Secondary School was adjudged champion in the Boys Category and San Shnong Secondary School, champion in the Girls Category.

Wapung Higher Secondary School emerged as the Overall Champion of this year’s meet.

            Individual honours were also awarded to Best Athletes in all the three age categories withKampher Dkhar of Sham Sham Secondary School being adjudged Best Male Athlete while Useful Kyndaitof Seinraj Branch Upper Primary School, Mukhaialong was adjudged Best Female Athlete of the Under-14 Category.

In the Under-16 Category, HighbornsonMuksorof Khliehriat Presbyterian Secondary School and NaphishwaDkharof Seinjait Tuber Higher Secondary School were adjudged Best Male and Best Female athletes respectively.

Ribait Bang and Budka Bang of Seinjait Tuber Higher Secondary School emerged as the Best Male and Best Female Athletes in the Under-18 Category.                             

It is to be mentioned that the winners of different events will be representing East Jaintia Hills District at the State Level Inter School Athletics Meet scheduled to be held soon.
