IIM Shillong marked the 79th Independence Day with great fervour and unity, honouring the courage and sacrifice of India’s freedom fighters. As one of the most diverse management institutions in the country, with students hailing from almost all states and union territories, the celebration in the scenic city of Shillong was a proud reminder of the nation’s strength in diversity.
The celebrations commenced with the hoisting of the National Tricolour by Prof. Nalini Prava Tripathy, Director (I/C), IIM Shillong. The flag, soaring high at 100 ft, reflected the institution’s aspirations and its commitment to contributing to the nation’s growth. The entire IIM Shillong fraternity joined in singing the national anthem, reaffirming their shared pride and unity.
In her address, Prof. Tripathy extended warm greetings to students, faculty, officers, staff, and their families, emphasising that independence is more than political freedom—it encompasses economic, technological, and intellectual empowerment. She highlighted the role of educators and students in shaping India’s future through leadership, innovation, and ethical decision-making, noting that true independence in the 21st century means the ability to think critically, innovate fearlessly, and act responsibly for the welfare of society, with every classroom, project, and internship serving as an opportunity to contribute to a developed India by 2047.
She called upon students to address pressing challenges such as environmental sustainability and inclusive growth, reminding them that leadership is about creating positive impact, not just holding titles. She also acknowledged the dedication of faculty, officers, and staff in upholding the institution’s values of integrity, inclusivity, and excellence.
A highlight of the day was the Award Ceremony honouring outsourced staff members whose efforts keep the campus running smoothly. Col. (Retd.) Dinesh Adhikari, Chief Administrative Officer, commended their invaluable contributions.
The celebrations concluded with a vibrant cultural programme featuring poetry recitations, dance, and skit performances by the IIM Shillong fraternity.
IIM Shillong’s Independence Day celebrations this year were not just a commemoration of history, but a reaffirmation of its commitment to shaping leaders who will contribute to building a Viksit Bharat by 2047.
