The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Meghalaya, conducted a rescue and recovery operation following a soil collapse incident at a construction site in Mawdiangdiang, East Khasi Hills District, today 12.06.2026.
Information regarding the incident was received from the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills. Acting promptly, an SDRF team led by Inspector T. Tynsong was immediately dispatched to the location and reached the site at 2:42 PM.
Preliminary assessment revealed that labourers were carrying out excavation work for a building foundation when a mass of filled soil from the upper portion of the site suddenly gave way and collapsed into the excavation pit. During the incident, one labourer was trapped beneath the debris and after approximately one hour of intensive operation, the SDRF team located and retrieved the victim from beneath the debris at 4:10 PM.
The body was subsequently handed over to the concerned authorities and ambulance personnel in the presence of officials from the Mawdiangdiang Police Outpost, the Headman of Mawdiangdiang, the owner of the construction site, and co-workers of the deceased.
