The North Eastern Council (NEC), under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), released over ₹13.58 crore under the Schemes of NEC (SoNEC) during May–June 2026 to support key development initiatives in Meghalaya covering healthcare, education, renewable energy, research, culture, connectivity and community infrastructure.
A major intervention was the installation of a 1.5 Tesla MRI System at Tura Civil Hospital, which will significantly improve diagnostic services for patients in Garo Hills and adjoining areas. In the education sector, NEC supported infrastructure development at Shillong Polytechnic and Development of Multi-Disciplinary Training-cum-Resource Centre, Shillong organized by NERCORMS to strengthen technical education, innovation and academic excellence.
To preserve Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage, NEC provided assistance for the Seng Khasi Cultural Complex and the Seinraij Jowai Community Hall, creating modern spaces for cultural, educational and community activities. NEC also supported infrastructure upgradation at Iewduh Market, improving facilities for traders, farmers and consumers while strengthening one of the region’s largest traditional marketplaces. In the renewable energy sector, NEC supported surveys and investigations for the Mawblei, Myntdu Leshka Stage-II and Selim Hydroelectric Projects, laying the groundwork for future clean energy development in the State.
During May-June, 2026, NEC also released Rs. 18.93 Crore to regional agencies including universities, technical institutes, NGOs, Societies, etc. for promotion of NE region. Part of the fund released was for supporting the various events and study projects
held in Meghalaya such as Industry Academia Research Conclave-2025 organized by NIT-Meghalaya, Miss & Mister Beauty Pageant – 2026 at NEIGRIHMS, Shillong.

Road in June, 2026 is a major boost to enhancing access to the airport and facilitating tourism, trade and regional connectivity.
These investments reaffirm NEC’s commitment to accelerating inclusive and sustainable development in Meghalaya by strengthening healthcare, education, research, renewable energy, cultural preservation, connectivity and community infrastructure, thereby improving public services and enhancing the quality of life across the State.
