Lady Keane College, one of Meghalaya’s premier institutions of higher learning, celebrated its 91st Foundation Day under the theme “Building Tomorrow with 91 Years of Legacy.” The occasion commemorated the institution’s remarkable journey of academic excellence, women empowerment, and nation-building over the past nine decades.
The celebration was graced by the Hon’ble Education Minister of Meghalaya, Lahkmen Rymbui, as the Chief Guest. Also present were Smt. H.B.D. Sangma, MCS, Director of the Directorate of Higher & Technical Education (DHTE), members of the Governing Board, distinguished alumni, faculty members, students, staff, and invited guests.
Addressing the gathering, the Hon’ble Education Minister congratulated the institution on its 91-year legacy of shaping generations of women leaders and contributing significantly to the advancement of education in Meghalaya and the Northeast. He described Lady Keane College as a symbol of excellence whose contributions extend beyond academics to the empowerment of women and society at large.
Speaking on the rapidly changing world, the Minister encouraged students to remain focused, patient, and purposeful amid technological advancements and the abundance of opportunities available today. He observed that while today’s youth are ambitious and eager to explore new possibilities, they must also cultivate patience, discipline, and clarity in choosing their paths.
The Minister reflected on how technology has transformed everyday life from community television broadcasts in earlier decades to the present era of smartphones, artificial intelligence, and instant digital content. He stressed that although the methods of communication have evolved, the importance of delivering meaningful messages and creating positive impact remains unchanged.
He further urged students to use technology responsibly, safeguard their mental well-being, and develop the ability to think critically and make informed decisions. Highlighting the Government’s continued investment in education and youth development, he said that the Government remains committed to creating platforms that encourage innovation, collaboration, and meaningful participation of young people in policy and development. He called upon students, educators, alumni, and stakeholders to work collectively in building a stronger education ecosystem for Meghalaya.
Speaking on the occasion, Smt. H.B.D. Sangma, MCS, Director of the Directorate of Higher & Technical Education, congratulated Lady Keane College for its outstanding contribution to women’s education and empowerment. She described the institution as a beacon of excellence whose legacy continues to inspire generations of students.
The Director noted that in today’s rapidly evolving world, students must go beyond classroom learning by embracing innovation, creativity, critical thinking, entrepreneurship, and emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence. She emphasised that while academic qualifications open opportunities, qualities such as character, attitude, competence, creativity, and lifelong learning ultimately determine success.
Expressing appreciation to the Principal, faculty, staff, and alumni, the Director acknowledged their continued cooperation with the Directorate in conducting examinations, implementing academic reforms, and supporting various higher education initiatives. She encouraged students to step beyond their comfort zones, respect their parents and teachers, preserve the environment, use technology wisely, take pride in Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage, and lead with humility, passion, and compassion.
On the occasion, the Hon’ble Education Minister officially released the College Magazine, the Keanean Journal of Arts, and the Annual History Magazine, marking another milestone in the institution’s academic and literary achievements.
During the Celebration the College also presented awards and recognitions to outstanding students, faculty members, and various institutional bodies for their achievements and contributions. Awards were distributed in categories including Research Publications, Meritorious Students of the Higher Secondary Section, Student Cells, PWD Cell, Fashion Design, and Co-curricular and Extra-Curricular Activities. The award ceremony highlighted the institution’s commitment to academic excellence, research, inclusivity, creativity, and the holistic development of students.
The celebration also featured vibrant cultural performances presented by the students, reflecting the rich talents, creativity, and cultural heritage of the college community.
As Lady Keane College journeys towards its centenary, the institution reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing excellence, empowering young women, and building future generations of responsible citizens who will contribute meaningfully to Meghalaya and the nation.
