Tympang Club Ïawmusiang, one of the oldest clubs in Jowai, organised literary competitions for schools and colleges in West Jaiñtia Hills District as part of its year-long Quasquicentennial (125th Anniversary) celebrations. The competitions were held today at the Club Hall.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. (Mrs.) Wa-i-Sa Sumer, DSEO/DMC and In-charge Joint Director, DSEL, West Jaiñtia Hills, in the presence of Ms. Ripnar Lyngdoh, Retired IAS Ms. Lhuid, Retired IAS S Dey, Retired Principal of Kiang Nangbah College; and other dignitaries.
The first event was a debate competition for colleges in the district on the motion, “Modern Lifestyle is Weakening Our Culture, Traditions, and Community Bonds.” Altogether, five colleges from across the district participated in the competition, which was moderated by H H Mohrmen.
The award for Best Debater was presented to Odawanlangki Sutnga of Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai. The second prize was awarded to Agatha L. Jongte of Thomas Jones Synod College, Jowai, while the third prize went to Silkame R. Sangma of Adventist College, Jowai.
The second event was an Extempore Speech Competition for Higher Secondary School students, in which seven schools participated. The first prize was awarded to Pynshngainmi Shylla of Little Angel School, Jowai. Shalva Shelly Shylla of Marian Hills Higher Secondary School won the second prize, while the third prize was awarded to Podolski Lamare of Jowai Presbyterian Higher Secondary School.
The competition was conducted by R Lamarr, former Principal of Bagmara Government College.
The Quiz Competition, organised for Secondary Schools, saw the participation of eight schools. Marian Hills Higher Secondary School, represented by Solomon Sna and Franky Precious Lyngdoh, won the first prize. H.K. Singh Secondary School, represented by Ardinaldson Syntem and Affection Kyndait, secured the second prize. Little Angel Higher Secondary School, represented by Wanlakerainam Phyrngap and Zephaniah Dondor Suchiang, won the third prize. The Quiz Master for the event was O. Phawa, Assistant Professor at Kiang Nangbah Government College, Jowai.
Others who spoke on the occasion included L Lamare, Secretary of the Award Committee, Tympang Club; Dr. (Mrs.) Ophilia Shylla; R. Lyngdoh, Retired IAS; and T. Passah, a member of Tympang Club. The winning schools and colleges were presented with cash prizes, certificates, and mementos.
