The Office of the District Horticulture Officer, East Jaintia Hills District today organized a District Level Exhibition on Horticultural Crops at the premises of the office of the District Agriculture Officer, Khliehriat where the Director of Horticulture, Government of Meghalaya, Smt. D. Sohtun attended the programme as Chief Guest in the presence of Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri A. Baranwal, District Horticulture Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri D.B. Dhar, other government officials, farmers and several others.

In her speech as a Chief Guest of the programme, Director of Horticulture, Government of Meghalaya, Smt. D. Sohtun highlighted the gathering on the aims and objectives of the exhibition even as she emphasized that the exhibition not only serves as a platform where farmers of the district can showcase their agricultural products but also acts as a forum for mutual exchange of knowledge, ideas and experiences between farmers from various parts of the district who grow different varieties of crops.

Additionally, she also encouraged the farmers present on the occasion to collaborate among themselves for enhancedproductivity of agricultural products and also urged upon them to make use of every support system provided by the government in their day to day agricultural and horticultural endeavours.

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri A. Baranwal in his speech congratulated the office of the District Horticulture Officer, East Jaintia Hills District for coming up with the purposeful programme even as he urged the offices of the District Horticulture Officer and District Agriculture Officer, East Jaintia Hills District to provide farmers of the district with training on organic farming as alsoon plantation of  different types of  crops suitable to  weather conditions of the region in order to enable farmers to furtherenhance their income.

Shri Baranwal, also expressed satisfaction on seeing the progress of mushroom cultivation in the district while urging the concerned departments to provide adequate training to farmers of the district even as he further stated that mushroom cultivation also serves as a viable alternative in raising the income of the people engaged with the profession.

Among others who spoke during the programme include District Horticulture Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri D.B. Dhar, Assistant Director, Horticulture, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri S.R. Mulieh, Executive Engineer, Water Resources, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri K. Lamare and Horticulture Development Officer, East Jaintia Hills District, Smt. B. Rymbai. After the programme all dignitaries led by the Director of Horticulture, Government of Meghalaya, Smt. D. Sohtun inspected the 16 stalls put up during the exhibition.(DPRO, Khliehriat)
