
World Environment Day 2025 carrying the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” was observed yesterday by the District Administration, East Jaintia Hills District at a programme held at the Conference Hall of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, East Jaintia Hills District.
The programme was attended by Additional Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Smti. J. U Kharpuri in the presence of Research Officer (Planning), Shri S. Marwein, Assistant Research Officer (Planning), Shri Vesper Sangma, District Informatics Officer, NIC, East Jaintia Hills District, Smti. I. Rymbai, District Programme Manager (DPM), District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), East Jaintia Hills District, Smti. Sanda Sutnga, other officials and staff of the office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District.
In her address during the programme, Smti. J. U Kharpuri emphasized on the significance of World Environment Day highlighting to the gathering the bountiful blessings of nature in different areas across East Jaintia Hills District and stressed the need to preserve these resources despite the developmental strides made through modernization and industrialization.
Speaking on the theme of this year’s observation which is Beat Plastic Pollution, Smti. Kharpuri spoke at length on the harmful effects of single use plastics and other non-degradable items which accumulate as waste thus causing damage to the environment.
Narrating her personal experiences, Smti. Kharpuri shared a personal realization about the need to reduce plastic use and called upon the gathering to work individually and collectively in environment conservation efforts even as she encouraged the use of reuseable and recyclable items.

After the programme, a cleanliness and tree plantation drive was held in the compound of the office of the Deputy Commissioner to mark the observation.
