The office of the Senior Dairy Officer, West Jaintia Hills observed the National Milk Day today at Jowai Dairy Plant, Mooralong with Shri. L. S Shangpliang, Director of Dairy Development,Meghlaaya as the chief guest.
Shri. L.S Shangphiang, spoke about the significance of National Milk Day and reminded everyone that this day marks the birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurein, the ‘Father of the White Revolution in India.” He explained that because of Dr. Kurien’s contribution, India rose from very low milk production to becoming one of the world’s leading milk producing countries.
He mentioned in Meghalaya, dairy farming has gained importance only in recent years, earlier, people reared cattle mainly for meat, and milk consumption in the state was very low. Only a few families kept cows for milk, and dairy farming was not widely practiced among the local populations. Today however, many indigenous Khasi and Jaintia communities have begun to take up dairy farming. He pointed out that cattle rearing is easy and difficult at the same time, we should support them by buying the milk and other products they produce.
Shri. Shangpliang urged the public to support local milk producers, so that they can earn sufficient and stable income. Supporting local farmers, he said, will increase their income and contribute to the economic growth and development of the region. He also brought to the notice to the public that the government has already initiated several missions aimed at helping farmers and individuals by improving milk production, providing financial assistance and promoting modern dairy techniques. He appealed to the community to make full use of these schemes for better progress.
