International Women’s Day 2026 under the theme “Give to Gain” was observed by the office of the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO) and District Sankalp Hub for Empowerment of Women, East Jaintia Hills District in collaboration with the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihood Society (MSRLS), District Mission Management Unit (DMMU) and Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA) at the Community Hall, Elaka Sutnga.

            The programme was attended by Assistant Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Smti. F. Wann, MCS, along with District Social Welfare Officer Smti. R. Bareh, Deputy Chief Legal Aid Defence Counsel, DLSA, Smti. K. Challam, District Mission Coordinator, DHEW, Shri Phrangshwa S. Lyngdoh, District Functional Specialist, MSRLS, Shri Heipormi Kjam and others including officials, Anganwadi workers, SHG members and students.

            In her address, Smt. F. Wann highlighted that women are the backbone of society and stressed the importance of women empowerment. She appreciated the role of Self Help Groups in enabling women to become financially independent and praised Anganwadi workers for their dedicated service to children. She also encouraged students, especially girls, to pursue education and work hard to achieve their dreams.

            Smt. K. Challam spoke about the free legal services provided by the District Legal Services Authority and highlighted laws aimed at protecting women and children. She also emphasized the importance of equal opportunities for women in finance, education and employment in line with the theme “Give to Gain”.

            During the programme, awards were presented to several women achievers, SHGs and Producer Groups in recognition of their contributions and impact on the community.
