
In an effort to generate public awareness about the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme and in order to sensitize communities on the causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment of Tuberculosis, the office of the District Tuberculosis Officer, Jaintia Hills today organized an awareness programme at Iongkaluh Sub-Centre, East Jaintia Hills District.
The programme was attended by Senior Tuberculosis Laboratory Supervisor, Jaintia Hills, Shri Watson Siangshai, Senior Treatment Supervisor, Khliehriat Unit, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri Nelofer Nartiang, other health officials, ASHAs, and people of the area.
During the programme, Senior Tuberculosis Laboratory Supervisor, Jaintia Hills, Shri Watson Siangshai said that TB is a disease caused by bacteria known as Mycobacterium Tuberculosis which is a highly infectious disease and highlighted to the gathering the types of Tuberculosis such as Pulmonary TB which affect the lungs and Extra Pulmonary TB which affects a person in lymph nodes, pleura, bones, joints, urinary tract, nervous system, abdomen, skin, etc.
Further, Shri Siangshai sensitized the gathering on the 10 (Ten) signs and symptoms of Tuberculosis which include persistent cough lasting more than two weeks, coughing with blood, chest pain, fever, night sweats, weight loss, loss of appetite, fatigue or weakness, chills and shortness of breath even as he urged the gathering to get themselves and their family members tested for early detection if they notice any signs or symptom.
Furthermore, he informed the gathering about the free medical check-ups available in the district with respect to Tuberculosis (TB). He also highlighted the financial assistance provided to TB patients, including Rs.1,000/- per month during the course of treatment under Nikshay Poshan Yojana, a one-time incentive of Rs.750/- is provided to TB patient from tribal communities and also about the incentive provided to ASHA workers with Rs. 50/- for each patient registered under Nikshay, and an amount of Rs.500 is given to individuals who bring TB patients to the PHC, CHC, etc. for testing and treatment.
During the programme, a skit was also performed by ASHA and community members of Iongkaluh Village on the theme “Yes, We Can End TB”.
Earlier in the day as part of the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme a miking programme was conducted at Khliehriat market and Ladrymbai market with the aim to sensitize communities on the causes, symptoms, prevention and treatment of Tuberculosis and to encourage early detection and adherence to treatment.
