The Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District in a notification issued has informed that the Committee for Prevention of Child Marriage in East Jaintia Hills District has been re-constituted with the Deputy Commissioner cum Child Marriage Prohibition Officer, East Jaintia Hills District as Chairperson and District Child Protection Officer (DCPO), East Jaintia Hills District as Member Secretary.
Other members of the committee include representatives of government departments including Police, Health, Social Welfare, Education etc, social workers, traditional institutions & faith based organizations and these include Superintendent of Police, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General), District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), District Programme Officers, ICDS Cell, East Jaintia Hills District, Block Development Officers, Wapung, Saipung and Lumshnong, Blocks, District Medical & Health Officer (DMHO), Public Prosecutors/ Government Pleaders, District School Education Officer (DSEO), Sub-Divisional School Education Officer (SDSEO), District Mission Coordinator (SSA), District Mission Manager, DDMU, MSRLS, NRLM, Social Workers, namely Sbunlang Dkhar and Jimmy Langstang, Director JHDC, Pastoral Centre, Samanlang Lumbihsyntu-Mihmyntdu, West Jaintia Hills District, Rev. Father Manbha Pakem, Secretaries of Sutnga Presbytery, Rymbai Presbytery, Narpuh Border Presbytery & Wapung Presbytery, President/Secretary, Sein Raij Tuber, East Jaintia Hills District and President/Secretary of Synjuk Ki Waheh Shnong/ Shnong Committee.
Among the terms of reference of the committee include conduct of workshops, training sessions, awareness programmes, etc on Child Marriage to sensitize the community on the issue and to create awareness of the evil which results from Child Marriages. The committee is also tasked with prevention of solemnization of Child Marriage by taking such action as deemed fit, collection of evidence for the effective prosecution of persons contravening the provisions of the Act and provision of advice to either individual cases or counseling citizens in general not to indulge in promoting, helping, aiding or allowing the solemnization of Child Marriage.
