The Jaintia Students’ Union-Central Body has urged the authorities to take immediate steps to review electoral rolls in the Jaintia Hills region, citing concerns over the increasing number of non-tribal individuals possessing voting rights in a predominantly tribal area.
In a representation submitted recently, the Union expressed apprehension that the growing presence of non-tribal voters, particularly during the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Elections, raises serious questions regarding the accuracy and authenticity of the existing electoral rolls. According to the Union, such developments could potentially affect the political rights, identity, and interests of the indigenous tribal population.
The Union pointed out that similar exercises have been undertaken in states such as West Bengal, where Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was conducted to maintain credibility and prevent illegal or questionable entries. It therefore advocated the implementation of a similar revision process in the Jaintia Hills region, particularly in sensitive areas.
The Union has placed the following demands before the concerned authorities. Amendment of relevant rules to make ST certification mandatory for all candidates contesting elections under the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC).
Mandatory ST certification for voters participating in JHADC elections.
Amendment of Rule 8 and Rule 128 to restrict eligibility for contesting elections to indigenous tribal individuals of Jaintia Hills.
Immediate implementation of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Jaintia Hills, particularly in sensitive and affected areas.
The JSU stated that these measures are necessary to uphold democratic principles, ensure transparency in the electoral process, and preserve the identity and rightful representation of indigenous tribal communities in the region.
The representation was signed by President Jersom Shylla and General Secretary Neilkee Mukhim, who urged the authorities to take prompt action on the matter.
