Society for Environment Protection and Sustainable Development (SEPSD), under the motto “Protect Today For A Better Tomorrow,” celebrated World Environment Day 2026 at Tia Chaphrang Higher Secondary School, Sohkymphor, in East Jaintia Hills District. The event was held under the theme “Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For Our Future.”
The program was attended by Shri Kyrmen Shylla, MLA of the Khliehriat Constituency , Krison Langstang MDC of the JHADC , the Chairman of SEPSD , the school headmaster , Sohkymphor Headman Lomis Langstang , teachers , students and several invited dignitaries.
Activities included a prize distribution for winners of a student drawing competition and a tree-planting drive. MLA Kyrmen Shylla and MDC Krison Langstang participated in the plantation activity along with other guests.
Addressing the gathering as chief guest, Kyrmen Shylla said that mineral resources should be used responsibly. He added that using resources is not inherently wrong because society needs them, but we must restore and compensate for environmental damage through schemes and royalties to reclaim damaged land. He described the tree-planting drive as a way of asking forgiveness from the environment and urged everyone to plant as many trees as possible. He noted that India still has substantial green and virgin forests and appealed to citizens—if each of India’s more than 147 crore people planted three trees, it would be a strong contribution to the nation and society. He also said that those who refuse to plant trees should not be allowed to burn wood or use forest products for personal purposes.
Krison Langstang, MDC of JHADC, said the program served as environmental education for students. He also commented on student behavior, noting that some students avoided sitting in front rows, which disappointed him. He urged students to maintain discipline in sports, studies, and other areas, saying that discipline is essential to reach one’s goals.
Sohkymphor Headman Lomis Langstang warned that industrial growth and vehicle pollution have created health problems. He said environmental experts agree on the need to protect the environment: for every tree cut, ten should be planted. Without forests, wildlife cannot survive; protecting forests is vital for our future.
Wanbun N. Dkhar, Chairman of SEPSD, reminded the audience that protection of the environment is a fundamental duty under Article 51A of the Constitution of India. He clarified that SEPSD does not oppose development or industry, but advocates balancing development with ecological protection. He said the event aims to inspire students to become responsible citizens.
