As part of the observation of International Day against Drug Abuse & Illicit trafficking and as a major step towards combating drug abuse, the office of the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), East Jaintia Hills District today organized a District Bike Rally under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan which began in the premises of the office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Khliehriat and proceeded along the route Lad Sutnga- Ladrymbai and Rymbai Village where the rally culminated.

The rally was flagged off by Additional Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri A Nongbri, MCS in the presence of the District Social Welfare Officer (DSWO), East Jaintia Hills District, Smti. R. Bareh, Programme Manager, Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association (MCSWA), Khliehriat, Smti. R. Patlong and others.

In his address prior to commencement of the rally, Additional Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri A. Nongbri, MCS stated that the bike rally serves as a platform to spread awareness among the residents of the district, particularly the youth about the menace of drug abuse and the importance of collective efforts in combating this social evil even as he informed that the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan was launched on August 15, 2020 to remind citizens of the importance of freedom not only from colonial rule but also from all forms of social evils, especially drug addiction.

He emphasized that the fight against drugs requires the active participation and cooperation of all stakeholders, including Government departments, NGOs, community-based organizations, educational institutions and members of the public to achieve the goal of a drug-free India.

Shri Nongbri further noted that drug abuse continues to be one of the major challenges confronting the district. Although the Police Department has successfully detected and cracked numerous drug-related cases, the problem continues to affect society, he added. Shri Nongbri reiterated the need for a collaborative and sustained approach to tackle the issue and expressed optimism that the rally would effectively convey the message to the people, particularly the youth, to stay away from substance abuse.

Furthermore, he also informed that a rehabilitation centre will soon be established in the district to assist individuals affected by drug addiction. The centre will provide support and opportunities for recovery, enabling affected individuals to rebuild their lives and reintegrate into society as productive citizens.

Earlier, all participants and dignitaries led by Programme Manager, Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association (MCSWA), Khliehriat, Smti. R. Patlong took a pledge to show commitment in combating against drug abuse in order to make the district and country free from drugs.
