
The Meghalaya State Judicial Academy, in collaboration with the Meghalaya Police, today organised a one-day workshop on the theme “The Laws Behind Road Safety: Learn the Rules, Respect the Road” at the Auditorium of the High Court of Meghalaya, Shillong.
The workshop brought together students, legal professionals and traffic officials to promote awareness of responsible road use and adherence to traffic rules. The programme focused on the legal framework governing road safety and the responsibilities of motorists, passengers and other road users.
Director of the Meghalaya State Judicial Academy, Smt. Kerpa Meida Lyngdoh Nongbri, welcomed the gathering and highlighted the importance of creating greater awareness of road safety laws among citizens, particularly young road users.
During the first session, Additional SP (Traffic), East Khasi Hills, Shri Lovish Garg, IPS, along withShri Don Kitbor Koshy Mihsill, MJS, Judicial Magistrate First Class, East Khasi Hills, Shillong and Sohra Sub-Division, interacted with the participants and responded to questions raised by students on road safety and the law.
Speaking on the topic, Lovish Garg, IPS, emphasised the importance of understanding the relationship between individual rights and road safety. He stressed that personal choices on the road must not compromise the safety of other road users.
The workshop covered various aspects of road safety, including common traffic violations and their legal consequences, the importance of wearing helmets and seat belts, and the e-Challan system. Discussions also focused on road accident prevention and investigation, safe driving practices and the role of technology in improving road safety.
Participants were introduced to modern traffic-management technologies, including Intelligent Traffic Management Systems, CCTV and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, AI-based traffic monitoring, speed enforcement mechanisms and emergency response systems.
Deputy SP Ri-Bhoi Varun Dkhar MPS , andDeputy Inspector General, BSF Shillong Sector, V.S. Rathore, IPS, were among the speakers who shared their insights on road safety, traffic enforcement and responsible road use.
An interactive Road Safety Quiz was also conducted, covering traffic signs, road rules, accident scenarios and traffic-related issues specific to Meghalaya. The quiz provided participants with an opportunity to test their knowledge and engage in discussions on practical road safety concerns.
The Traffic Branch also set up stalls where participants interacted with officials and received information on traffic enforcement measures, road safety practices and technology-enabled traffic management.
The workshop concluded with a Road Safety Ambassador Pledge, reinforcing the message that safer roads require responsible behaviour, awareness and respect for traffic laws from every road user.
