The Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) Jaiñtia Region submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaiñtia Hills District, Shri Manish Kumar IAS, formally objecting to the proposal for Lum Syrman Limestone Block-A (217.394 hectares) by M/s Shree Cement Limited.

The memorandum was presented by HNYM Jaiñtia Region President Bartis Pajuh and Secretary Mechan Dkhar.

Speaking to the media, President Pajuh condemned the government and concerned departments. He urged them to halt the project immediately and hold discussions beforehand to avoid casualties or violence. The organization called on the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), district administration, and government to cancel the public hearing scheduled for May 22, 2026, in Nongkhlieh Elaka.

Pajuh highlighted that Deputy Chief Minister Shri Sniawbhalang Dhar stated on March 14 that he had issued the license to Shree Cement Limited. The HNYM condemned elected representatives for disregarding the land rights and ownership of Nongkhlieh Elaka residents. The group warned of further action if the government ignores their objections.

The President added that only 10-20 locals would benefit from the cement company, with most jobs going to non-tribals. He urged the Deputy CM to prioritize improving road conditions from Sutnga to Saipung, which serve as the lifeline for hundreds of villages in the region.

Meanwhile, Secretary Mechan Dkhar remarked that promises of development improving the district have fallen short. Instead, diseases are rising, and progress is lagging. He condemned local leaders, including the Dolloi, secretary, and executive members of Nongkhlieh Elaka, for prioritizing self-interest and selling off community land.

Dkhar recalled that HNYM opposed the cement plant from the outset but was barred from the area initially. “We live in a democracy, yet the government ignores ordinary people,” he said. He urged Nongkhlieh residents to unite now, warning, “Don’t wait until the water is at your neck—then it will be too late.”
