The East Jaintia Taxi’s Owner Driver Association (EJTODA), ON March 27, met with Vikram Rai Ryngkhlem, District Transport Officer (DTO) of East Jaintia Hills, to address illegal taxi operations in the district.

EJTODA President Shining Siangshai said many vehicles are operating as local taxis without valid permits. Some private vehicles with valid papers are also functioning as taxis. The association responsibly approached the DTO to enforce laws against illegal operators. Many legitimate local taxis are still paying EMIs and struggling amid the state’s economic downturn, so they urged restrictions on illegal taxis. Outsiders buy vehicles and operate freely in the district without oversight.

The DTO assured action but noted that enforcement teams are currently busy with weight bridge construction. He asked for time and promised help within the coming week.

There are about 300 local taxis with valid documents in the district. However, 300–400 more operate illegally without proper papers, often as private vehicles.

Siangshai expects the DTO to follow through. If not, the association will take further steps.

On VLTD devices, existing local taxis are exempt and don’t need installation. Discussions continue with the Home Ministry for new registrations, but no decision has been made. Registered vehicles remain exempt.

The association faces challenges checking illegal taxis due to limited enforcement in the district. They can’t take matters into their own hands, which is why they approached the DTO.
