The Jaintia National Council (JNC), Khliehriat Circle, has submitted a formal complaint to the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills District, demanding a fair and time-bound inquiry into the alleged vandalism of public vehicles and damage to public infrastructure during the public hearing for the proposed Shree Cement project held on July 31, 2026.
In its representation, the JNC stated that a public hearing is a statutory process meant to enable citizens to participate peacefully in environmental decision-making. It expressed concern that any incidents of violence, intimidation, vandalism, or destruction of public and private property during such proceedings undermine the rule of law and discourage public participation in democratic processes.
The organisation also alleged that the PWD road leading to the hearing venue had been excavated and damaged, resulting in the destruction of public infrastructure built with public funds. According to the JNC, such acts pose a risk to public safety, disrupt essential infrastructure, and erode public confidence in the administration.
JNC has urged the district administration to identify those responsible using available evidence, including video recordings, photographs, and eyewitness accounts, and to initiate appropriate legal action against those found involved.
It further requested the administration to assess the damage caused to the affected vehicles, ensure that victims receive appropriate relief and compensation in accordance with the law, and make the findings of the inquiry public to promote transparency and restore public confidence.
Stressing the importance of maintaining law and order during public consultations, the JNC called on the Deputy Commissioner to take prompt and appropriate action in the matter.
