International Youth Day 2026 carrying the theme “Youth Advancing Multilateral Cooperation through Technology and Partnership” was today observed by the office of the District Sports Officer, East Jaintia Hills Districtin collaboration with the office of the Deputy Commissioner,East Jaintia Hills District at a programme held at Jaintia Eastern College (JEC), Khliehriat.
The programme was graced by Director, Jaintia Eastern College (JEC), East Jaintia Hills, Khliehriat as Chief Guest in the presence of the District Sports Officer (DSO) East Jaintia Hills District, Smti. S. M Rapsang, teachers, students from different schools and colleges across the district and others.
Speaking on the occasion, Director of Jaintia Eastern College (JEC), East Jaintia Hills, Dr. Phervision Nongtdu extended his greetings on International Youth Day and appreciated the District Sports Office, (DSO) participants and volunteers for successfully organising the programme. Referring to the theme, he said that although people come from different backgrounds, communities and cultures, they all share common aspirations for education, happiness and a better future. He stressed that multilateral cooperation, technology and partnerships are essential in helping young people achieve their goals and contribute positively to society.
Dr. Nongtdu encouraged the youth to make responsible use of technology, particularly Artificial Intelligence, while also reminding them to verify information before accepting it as accurate. He urged students to embrace teamwork, knowledge-sharing and innovation, noting that progress is achieved through cooperation among individuals, institutions and organisations. He also highlighted the importance of environmental conservation, digital literacy and skill development, stating that today’s youth should become leaders and changemakers of the present rather than waiting for tomorrow. Quoting Mahatma Gandhi and former US President Barack Obama, he called upon the youth to work together in unity despite diversity and contribute towards building a stronger and more progressive India.
The programme featured a variety of cultural and motivational activities including a motivational speech, solo singing, solo guitar performances, folk dance, folk song and other presentations by students, adding colour and enthusiasm to the celebration.
As part of the programme, four distinguished youths of East Jaintia Hills District were felicitated during the programme in recognition of their outstanding achievement in representing the district and the State at the National and International levels. Among them, John Khawbung and Miss Isa Chullet represented the State at the International Youth Exchange Programme 2025 held in Malaysia, while Mr. Rishanki Langstang and Miss Wansakani Nongtdu will represent the State at the International Youth Exchange Programme 2026 to be held in Philippines.
