
Two persons have been arrested in connection with a mob attack on three suspected thieves and police personnel at Mawngap in East Khasi Hills.
According to a press release issued by the Office of the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, information was received at around 5:40 AM on August 23 that suspected thieves had been apprehended by members of the public at 11 Mer, Myllyiem. Police personnel from Mawngap Police Station rushed to the spot and found a mob assaulting three suspected thieves.
The three persons were identified as 25-year-old Banshan Kurbah of Mairang, Lumkyllang; 26-year-old Albert Marbaniang of Mawlai Mawtawar; and 27-year-old Ibalabet Kharmawlong of Mawlai Mawtawar.
Police intervened and rescued the three individuals. During the rescue operation, members of the mob allegedly manhandled police officers and staff, used offensive language and continued assaulting the suspects.
The injured persons were taken to Pomlum PHC for medical examination before being brought to Mawngap Police Station for safe custody. The Maruti car bearing registration number ML05-T-9837, allegedly used by the suspects, was also towed and kept at the police station.
The three suspected thieves were later released as no complaint was received against them from either side.
In connection with the incident, a suo-moto case was registered at Mawngap Police Station under Case No. 51(08)2026 under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. During the investigation, police arrested two persons allegedly involved in leading the mob attack: 37-year-old Arning Kharkongor alias Arning of Myllyiem Kyndong, 11th Mile, and 33-year-old Pynshaiborlang Kharkongor alias Lung Matok of Myllyiem Kyndong, 11th Mile.
Both arrested persons are being produced before the Hon’ble Court. Further investigation is underway.
The police have appealed to the public not to take the law into their own hands and to immediately inform police by dialling 112 or contacting the nearest police station in such cases.
