
The Hon’ble Minister for Education, Government of Meghalaya, Shri Lahkmen Rymbui, attended the First Prof. Barrister Pakem Academic Awards organised by the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) at Jowai. The programme was graced by former Pro Vice-Chancellor of NEHU, Shri Henry Lamin; MDC of Jowai Central, Shri Andrew Shullai; Dr. Didakamiwan Khonglah, daughter of the Late Prof. Barrister Pakem; along with distinguished guests, parents, award recipients, and members of the public.
The programme commenced with a welcome address by the Assistant Secretary of the Jaintia Students’ Union, followed by a presentation on the life and contributions of the Late Prof. Barrister Pakem, highlighting his immense role in the educational, Political and intellectual landscape of Meghalaya.
Addressing the gathering, the Hon’ble Education Minister congratulated the Jaintia Students’ Union for instituting the award in honour of the Late Prof. Barrister Pakem, one of Meghalaya’s most distinguished academicians, scholars, and visionaries. He stated that the award serves as a fitting tribute to a man whose contributions to education, literature, and society continue to inspire generations of students across the State.
The Minister emphasised that education remains the most powerful tool for empowerment and societal transformation. He encouraged students to pursue academic excellence with dedication, perseverance, and integrity, reminding them that true success is measured not only by academic achievements but also by character, leadership, and service to society.
Speaking on the importance of recognising merit, the Minister said that honouring outstanding students motivates young people to strive for excellence and fosters a culture of healthy competition and lifelong learning. He noted that Meghalaya’s future depends on the aspirations and achievements of its youth and urged students to make the most of the opportunities available to them.
The Minister further highlighted the State Government’s commitment to strengthening the education sector through improved infrastructure, enhanced learning opportunities, skill development initiatives, and policies aimed at ensuring quality education for all. He called upon students to become ambassadors of positive change and contribute towards the progress and development of Meghalaya.
Acknowledging the role of parents and teachers, the Minister expressed his appreciation for their sacrifices and unwavering support in guiding students towards academic success. He remarked that the achievements being celebrated were the result of a collective effort involving students, families, educators, and institutions.
The occasion was further enriched by a captivating musical performance by the Elev Tribe Choir, whose presentation added colour and vibrancy to the event and was warmly appreciated by the audience.
The programme concluded with the distribution of awards to deserving students in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements.
The event marked a significant milestone in celebrating educational excellence and preserving the legacy of the Late Prof. Barrister Pakem, whose contributions continue to inspire the youth of Meghalaya.
