Winning a total of 89 points, Sham Sham Secondary School emerged as the Overall Champion Team in the East Jaintia Hills District Level Inter School Athletics Meet 2026 which came to a close on May 1, at Teilang Playground, Dkhiah West, East Jaintia Hills District.

            The Closing Ceremony of this year’s meet was attended by Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri Manish Kumar, IAS, as Chief Guest in the presence of District Sports Officer (DSO), East Jaintia Hills District, Smti. Stephanie M Rapsang, Principal Jaintia Eastern College (JEC), Dr. P. Nongtdu, other officials, sports association members, teachers and students.

          In his address, Deputy Commissioner, East Jaintia Hills District, Shri Manish Kumar, IAS stated that while the day marked the culmination of the athletics meet, the event was not merely about competition but also about instilling important values such as hard work, teamwork, dedication, perseverance and the ability to learn from setbacks. He commended all the students for their participation, emphasizing that participation itself reflects courage, commitment and determination.

            Further, he congratulated those who secured positions, noting that such achievements serve as motivation for continued excellence even as he encouraged those who could not secure positions to remain motivated and strive harder in the future, adding that these values are essential not only in sports but also in academics and other aspects of life.

            DC also lauded the efforts of the office of the District Sports Officer, acknowledging their dedication and consistent hard work over the past two months in organizing the event. He articulated satisfaction at the large participation of students and teachers and expressed optimism about expanding such events on a larger scale in the district in the future.

         While highlighting the broader significance of sports, Shri Kumar remarked that sports is not just a physical activity but a vital component in building a strong value system. It helps in maintaining a balance between physical and mental well-being and between professional and personal life. He further observed that in today’s evolving world, sports has emerged as a viable career option and expressed hope that students from the district could go on to represent at national and international levels, including the Olympics.

          He also acknowledged the crucial role played by parents, teacher, and community members in supporting and motivating the students, stating that such encouragement is essential for success in sports.

           While Speaking about the commitment of the District Administration to enhance sports infrastructure in the district, particularly in football, he also encouraged schools to come forward with proposals for further developments in other sports infrastructure, stating that such initiatives would benefit the youth and promote sporting culture in the district.

The closing event featured prize distribution to group wise champion teams with KB Memorial Higher Secondary School and Sham Sham Secondary School emerging as Champions of both the Under-14 and Under-16 Boys and Girls categories respectively.

Wapung Higher Secondary School and San Shnong Secondary School were adjudged Champions of the Under-18 Boys and Under-18 Girls categories respectively. Sham Sham Secondary School emerged as the Overall Champion of this year’s meet.

            Individual honours were also awarded to Best Athletes in all the three age categories with Ready Ryngkhlem of Wapung Higher Secondary Schoolbeing adjudged Best Male Athletewhile Lamsaka Dkhar of Sham Sham Secondary School was adjudged Best Female Athlete of the Under-14 Category.

            In the Under-16 Category, Highbornson Muksor of Khliehriat Presbyterian Secondary School and Sandiya Dkhar of Sham Sham Secondary School were adjudged Best Male and Best Female athletes respectively.

            In the Under-18 Category, Lastduh Lamurong of Don Bosco College and Rosy Sana of San Shnong Secondary School, Mukhaialong emerged as the Best Male and Best Female Athletes repectively.           

            It is to be mentioned that the winners of different events will be representing East Jaintia Hills District at the State Level Inter School Athletics Meet scheduled to be held soon.
