The India Meteorological Department (IMD), Meteorological Centre, Shillong, has issued a five-day weather warning for Meghalaya, forecasting widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall across several districts from July 11 to July 15, 2026.

According to the latest district-wise weather bulletin and warning map, East Khasi Hills has been placed under a Red Warning (Take Action) for July 11, indicating the likelihood of thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall. The district has also been placed under an Orange Alert (Be Prepared to Take Action) on July 12.

An Orange Alert has also been issued for South West Khasi Hills on July 11 and July 12, while South Garo Hills remains under an Orange Alert on July 11 due to the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

Several other districts, including South West Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills, North Garo Hills, West Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, and Eastern West Khasi Hills, have been placed under a Yellow Watch, with thunderstorms, lightning, and heavy rainfall likely at isolated places during the first two days of the forecast period.

The weather is expected to improve gradually from July 13 onward, with most districts remaining under a Yellow Watch for thunderstorms and isolated heavy rainfall. By July 14 and 15, no Orange or Red alerts have been issued, although localized thunderstorms and lightning are still likely across the state.

The IMD has advised residents, particularly those in districts under Red and Orange warnings, to remain vigilant and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and thunderstorms. People living in low-lying and landslide-prone areas have been urged to monitor official weather updates and take necessary precautions.

Authorities have also advised the public to stay away from water bodies, avoid taking shelter under isolated trees during thunderstorms, and follow instructions issued by local disaster management agencies.

The warning remains valid from 0830 hours IST of each forecast day until 0830 hours IST of the following day. The IMD has encouraged the public to regularly check official forecasts and weather warnings through its platforms and mobile applications for the latest updates.
