On May 11, 2026, the United Hynniewtrep Movement (UHM) of East Jaintia Hills District submitted a letter to Deputy Commissioner Shri Manish Kumar, IAS, strongly opposing the cancellation of hearings against Shree Cement’s proposed plant in Daistong village, within the Nongkhlieh Elaka.

The delegation was led by UHM President for East Jaintia Hills, Shri Brosenly Siangshai, along with General Secretary Shri Kyntilang Phawa and other members.

Speaking to the media afterward, Siangshai explained that villagers in Daistong rely heavily on farming. He warned that the plant would pollute water sources and air quality, harming the community. The UHM threatened further action: if authorities do not respond, they will file a public interest litigation with the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board. Siangshai added that neighboring villages would also be affected.
